Yesterday’s Journal Can Become Tomorrow’s Memoir

New life stories are created in many ways. Sometimes a whole new life story happens itself upon us, and we have to decide how to make the best of it. Often, we deliberately decide it’s time to change our lives for the better and set out to compose a new life for ourselves.

An important part of building a new life story is understanding, healing, and coming to terms with our past life stories. We use our old lives to propel ourselves forward, use them as fuel, use them as compost for new growth.

Rather than denying or hiding our past, we mine it for the surprising and hidden riches it may contain.

Journal keepers and writers already have a wealth of material to draw on. As we look back, we strengthen ourselves by reinterpreting or reframing events of our past. Writing a memoir can become a powerful healing process as we literally become the authors of our own stories.

Thanks for the thought provoking entry. I like using the old life to propel forward philosophy. Have a happy day, Ellen!

Craig, I love your use of the word propel. That is exactly my philosophy and why my most important symbol is the chambered nautilus. This creature keeps expanding out of its old shell and must build bigger and bigger homes for itself. Through a tube connecting the chambers, it is able to balance and propel itself forward. So the old shells are used to create forward motion. Properly understood and “mined,” our past can truly enrich our new lives as we move forward. In a sense, as we write journals and memoirs, we harness the energy of our past to move us into the lives we are meant to live. So we are rewriting our lives.

Growing and being “at home” with ourselves…such nuggets of wisdom! And being “at home” in self no matter how we find our “home” adorned for the day, or even the moment…scant or luxurious.. is a gift of peace I have found in journeying and journaling under the wing of your insights! Thank you for being true to your path home Ellen! Bless you!

Thank you for the kind words, Sandy. It’s good to hear from you. You put it well: journeying and journaling. Yes, it is a path of peace, a path toward home (literally, in my case). And yes, our home is within. I’m busy writing a “Rewriting Your Life” workshop, and for this fall, a new memoir writing workshop. Stay tuned for further developments.

I’m really enjoying the design and layout of your blog. It’s a very easy on the
eyes which makes it much more pleasant for me to come here and visit more
often. Did you hire out a developer to create your theme?

Superb work!

Thanks! I used a variety of sources. Being a latent Luddite, I need lots of guidance through the world of computers and blogs. Take care.
